Some Grand Canyon trips are about racing the clock, and some are about slowing all the way
down. This one was the second kind. Instead of pushing for a one-day crossing, we spent
three nights down in the canyon with friends, giving ourselves plenty of time to actually
enjoy the river, the creek, and the canyon itself instead of just passing through it.
Down the South Kaibab
We started on the South Kaibab Trail, one of the more dramatic ways into the Grand Canyon -
no shade, but wide open views the whole way down. The destination for night one was Bright
Angel Campground, tucked down near the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon. Dropping
in from the rim to the river in a single push is a reminder of just how big this place
really is.
Time at the Bottom
With camp set up at Bright Angel, we had the luxury of time most rim-to-rim hikers don't
get. We spent our days exploring the Colorado River and Bright Angel Creek, and wandering
the Phantom Ranch area - the historic little outpost by the river that feels like its own
world, worlds away from the rim above. We stayed a second night at Bright Angel
Campground, which meant no rush to move camp and more time just to take it all in down by
the water.
Climbing Back Out
For night three, we hiked up to Indian Garden Campground, a green, spring-fed oasis partway
up the canyon wall that makes a perfect staging point before the final push. From there we
climbed out via the Bright Angel Trail back to the South Rim, trading the river far below
for canyon views the whole way up.
Three nights, three campgrounds, and a whole lot of canyon in between - this was a bucket
list trip in every sense, and one of the best backpacking adventures I've shared with
friends.
