Biking with Phoebe

Biking with Phoebe, Dog in a Backpack, Single Track Bike Ride

Picture this: a mountain bike, a stretch of single track winding through Florida forest, and a one-year-old mini schnauzer riding along in a backpack strapped to my back. That's exactly how Phoebe and I spent this ride - her first time out on the trails with me, and honestly, one of my favorite rides in a while.
Working Up to It
I didn't just toss Phoebe in a backpack and head straight for single track. We built up gradually - starting with half-mile rides around the neighborhood, then a mile, then two - so I'd have real confidence she'd be comfortable before taking her out on a longer, bumpier ride through the woods. By the time we hit this 7-mile trail, she'd already logged enough backpack miles to know the drill.
The Gear
The backpack is made by Arcadia Trail, designed originally for hiking with dogs, but it works even better for biking in my experience. Getting her loaded up is its own little routine: she sits and stays while I get her front feet in, lift the front panel up to her chest and zip her in, then clip her harness to an internal tether for extra security before I put the pack on myself. There's always a little wiggling while she settles onto my back, but once she's in, she's locked in solid - she can see out, feel the breeze, and take in the ride, but she's not going anywhere she shouldn't. The bike itself is a hardtail mountain bike I've had for over 15 years, aluminum frame, not much in the way of front suspension, so I made a point of riding smoothly and soaking up the trail bumps myself rather than passing them along to her.
On the Trail
We took it in stages, stopping every couple miles so Phoebe could stretch her legs, get out of the pack for a bit, and reset before going back in. The trail itself wound through beautiful, dense Florida forest - the kind of single track that makes you forget how close you might actually be to civilization. About midway through, we had a genuinely special moment: a beautiful buck, at least eight points, stepped out near the trail. Phoebe sat straight up in the pack, clearly alert and curious, but - to her credit - she never barked, just watched him with total fascination.
The Reactions
If you've never ridden a bike with a dog riding shotgun in a backpack, you haven't seen people's faces light up quite like this. Everyone we passed just melted at the sight of her - and honestly, so do I every single time. There's something about a dog enjoying the wind in her face, ears back, just soaking in the ride, that never gets old.
How She Did
By the six-mile mark, after a few breaks along the way, Phoebe was doing great - settled, comfortable, clearly enjoying herself as much as I was. For a first single track outing, it went about as smoothly as I could have hoped. I'm already looking forward to more trail rides together, and if you'd like to see more of Phoebe out on the bike, that's exactly the kind of feedback that gets more of these made.
