Single Track Night Ride

Single Track Night Ride in the Woods, Mountain Biking

There's a different kind of quiet that shows up on a mountain bike trail after dark. No birds, no other trail users, just your headlight carving a tunnel through the trees and the hum of tires on packed dirt. I joined the Starkey Mountain Bike Trails group ride for a night out on the single track, and it turned into one of those rides that reminds you why you got into this sport in the first place.
Lights Through the Trees
Riding at night completely changes how a familiar trail feels. The single track through Starkey Wilderness Preserve twists between trees that seem to close in tighter once the sun's gone down, and watching other riders' lights bounce and flicker through the woods ahead was honestly one of the coolest parts of the whole ride.
Twisted Pine and Deliverance
We covered two trails that night: Twisted Pine first, at around seven miles, followed by Deliverance for another five, putting the group at roughly 12 miles total. Both trails run through classic Florida woods - tight, twisty single track that keeps you focused on the next turn instead of the darkness around you.
The Mandatory Break Spot
Partway through, we hit what the group calls the mandatory break spot, where the faster riders held up and let the rest of us catch up. It was a good excuse to catch our breath, except we were getting eaten alive by bugs the whole time we stood still. Moving air from riding is a mosquito's worst enemy out there, so standing around at night has its price.
Back to the Trailhead
After finishing up Deliverance, we popped out onto the service road for the ride back to the trailhead, headlights cutting the only light for miles. There's something satisfying about wrapping up a ride like this - tired legs, bug bites, and a trail you thought you knew shown to you in a completely different way.
Worth Doing at Least Once
If you've only ever ridden Starkey - or any trail system - during the day, a night ride with a group is worth trying at least once. Bring lights brighter than you think you need, bug spray, and a group of riders who know the trail, and you'll come away with a whole new appreciation for the woods.
